چکیده

The SLC final-focus system accommodates 29 fixed or adjustable collimators for machine protection and background reduction. By amplifying pulse-to-pulse orbit variations and by generating emittance growth, collimator wake fields may degrade the beam quality at the interaction point (IP). In the SLC final focus, collimator halfapertures are larger than the bunch length, so that the standard collimator-wake formula of Bane and Morton does not apply. Numerical wake-field calculations for SLC parameters agree quite well with the high-frequency impedance of a step-out transition, derived by Gianfelice and Palumbo. Due to the nature of a final-focus system, the wake-field kicks from all collimators add coherently, and the overall impact on luminosity can be significant. This paper suggests that collimator wake fields in the final focus provide a possible explanation for the 30% discrepancy between expected and measured luminosity in the 1994/95 SLC run.

Measurement of the Effect of Collimator Generated Wakefields on the Beams in the Slc *

Collimators with adjustable jaws are used in the SLC linac, arcs, and final focus to eliminate the tails of the beams that produce backgrounds in the SLD detectors. However, if the beams are not centered within the jaws of the collimators, transverse wakefields are generated which act to increase the beam emittances. The sensitivity to the beam offset is largest in the vertical collimators in t...

SLAC - PUB - 7140 June 1996 Diffraction Model of a Step - Out Transition *

The diffraction model of a cavity, suggested by Lawson, Bane and Sands is generalized to a step-out transition, Using this model, the high-frequency impedance is calculated explicitly for the case that the transition step is small compared with the beam-pipe radius. In the diffraction model for a small step-out transition, the total energy is conserved, but, unlike the cavity case, the diffract...

Wakefields in the LCLS

For a short bunch in an elliptical collimator we demonstrate that, as in a purely round collimator, the wake can be estimated from the primary fields of the beam alone. We obtain the wakes in the LCLS rectangular-to-round, undulator transitions using a hybrid method that includes indirect numerical (field) integration and an analytical potential energy term. For the LCLS 1 nC bunch charge confi...

Geometrical Wake of a Smooth Taper*

A transverse geometrical wake generated by a beam passing through a smooth taper is considered. Comparison of the existing theories for the impedance of smooth structures is performed to show that they agree in the frequency range determined by the dimensions of the transition region. A simple approach is developed for the calculation of the kick factor, which reduces finding of the kick factor...

An Rf Bunch-length Monitor for the Slc Final Focus

In preparation for the 1997 SLC run, a novel RF bunchlength monitor has been installed in the SLC South Final Focus. The monitor consists of a ceramic gap in the beam pipe, a 160-ft long X-band waveguide (WR90), and a set of dividers, tapers and microwave detectors. Electromagnetic fields radiated through the ceramic gap excite modes in the nearby open-ended X-band waveguide, which transmits th...
